Emergency Lighting Testing (EML)
Emergency lighting is a legal requirement in nearly all commercial and public buildings. It is designed to help people safely exit a building and locate firefighting or safety equipment during a power failure or emergency.
This is not optional. Testing must be carried out in line with BS 5266-1, Building Regulations and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Who Can Carry Out EML Testing?
Only fully trained and certified engineers should carry out emergency lighting testing. This system is critical for safety and must be handled by someone with the right qualifications and experience.
All TISS Electrical engineers are qualified and complete an annual refresher course to stay up to date with current standards and best practice.
How Often Should Testing Be Carried Out?
There are two levels of testing required.
Monthly testing involves simulating a power failure to check that each emergency light switches on and stays lit. This is carried out using a fish key rather than switching off the mains. A record of each test must be kept and any issues reported for remedial action.
Annual testing requires mains lighting to be shut off while emergency lights must remain on for a full three hours. This tests battery life and fitting condition. Any lights that fail during this period will need replacing or repair.
What Can We Do For You?
We handle monthly and annual EML testing so you stay compliant without the added stress. You will receive clear, easy to read reports showing any issues found during the inspection. We can also provide practical advice on replacing or upgrading your emergency lighting system where needed.
We are happy to combine EML testing with PAT or RCD testing to save you time and reduce the number of site visits required.
